Phillips was pronounced dead on scene as a result of the life-threatening injuries he sustained in the accident. When the light changed and Phillips continued driving his Toyota Matrix, he was hit head-on by a wrong-way driver in a Dodge Journey SUV that was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, causing a collision in the roadway.
